About Our Foster Cat Program 🐾

A cat in a bird store? Yes, it’s true!

Since Wild Birds Unlimited of North Asheville opened in 2016, more than 95 foster cats have found their temporary home in our store through partnerships with local animal rescue organizations. Today, we’re proud to partner with Brother Wolf Animal Rescue.

Our foster cats love greeting customers, lounging on a bag of birdseed, and watching the birds on our store TV. And we love seeing members of our community stop in to say hello, play with the cats, and maybe even meet their future best friend.

Our store cats are available for adoption through Brother Wolf Animal Rescue. Adoptions require an application and adoption fee and are handled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Birds & Cats

We love cats, and we love birds—which is why we believe they’re best enjoyed safely and separately.

Domestic cats are natural predators, and free-roaming cats can pose a serious threat to songbirds. We always recommend keeping cats indoors. Indoor cats generally live longer and healthier lives, and they can still enjoy one of the best nature shows around: the birds outside your window! Place a bird feeder where your cat can safely watch from inside. Window feeders are especially fun for feline birdwatchers.

Have an indoor-outdoor cat? Although we strongly recommend keeping cats indoors, there are steps you can take to reduce the risk to birds if your cat goes outside. Keep bird feeders positioned well out of your cat’s reach, and consider a Birdsbesafe cat collar. These brightly patterned collars alert birds to a nearby cat, giving them a better chance to escape. We carry Birdsbesafe collars in our store — just ask us about them the next time you visit.
